Up until WW2 the Thörnicher Ritsch was among the most renowned sites along the Mosel. The name Ritsch derives from the brittle grey slate soil. Due to the fragility of the soil it is not possible to build roads in this site. Hence the vines grow all the way up the hill even onto the smallest terraces. The vineyard was also classified as a top-site by Pigott and Johnson as well as in the 1868 classification.
Vast fruit aromas and mineral structures are the characteristics of the Ritsch.
